What a strong answer shows

  • A clear, specific role you played rather than vague 'we did everything' language
  • Communication and collaboration skills, especially handling a challenge or disagreement
  • A concrete outcome plus what you learned about working with others

A simple structure: STAR

  1. Situation: Briefly set the scene: the class, project, job or club, the team size, and the goal.
  2. Task: Explain your specific role or responsibility and any challenge the team faced.
  3. Action: Describe what you personally did, using 'I' statements, especially how you coordinated or resolved an issue.
  4. Result: Share the outcome, with a number or feedback if you have one, and one lesson you took away about teamwork.

Sample answer

Sure. In my [course name] class, I worked on a [number]-person team to build [project, e.g., a marketing plan or app prototype] over [timeframe]. I took on the role of [your role, e.g., coordinator or lead on data analysis]. About halfway through, we realized [challenge, e.g., two members had different visions and we were falling behind]. I suggested we [action, e.g., set up a short weekly check-in and a shared task tracker] so everyone knew who owned what, and I [specific contribution]. As a result, we [outcome, e.g., finished a few days early and earned an A, or got positive feedback from the professor]. What I took away is that clear communication early on prevents a lot of stress later, and I've used that approach on every team since.

A general example: swap the [brackets] for your own experience, and say it in your own words.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Saying 'we' the whole time so the interviewer can't tell what you actually did
  • Blaming or criticizing teammates instead of showing how you worked through the issue
  • Picking a story with no challenge or result, which makes the answer forgettable
